three peaks

The 3 Peaks Challenge - Part 1

Oh my god....we've only got seven and a bit weeks to go!....

I wanted to use my first blog to give everyone a bit of background, tell you what we're doing and let you into how on earth we managed to get ourselves into this!

For those of you out there that have never heard of the 3 peaks, it basically involves climbing the 3 highest mountains in the UK in as short a time as possible. Some completely mad people do it in 24 hours, the rest of us who are only marginally potty, do it over a couple of days. You can expect to cover around 23 miles, but bear in mind that that's up and down as opposed to walking on the flat.

It was last December, (doesn't it feel like years ago?!) and I saw an e-mail saying that there were a few London Marathon places left. I turned to Paul who was sitting next to me and said "do you not think that would be a great thing to do? We could raise loads for charity and do it as a team thing as well?" I'll not tell you exactly what he said, but it was basically no. He then said to me " I've always fancied doing the 3 peaks actually" and so our challenge was born!...

With huge excitement we spoke to our director and and she thought it was a great idea. Time to e-mail and see who else was interested....We sent a message out to the whole of the International team.....to be fair instead of laughing in our face, most people just didn't reply! Then we started to get some people saying they were interested and to our surprise one or two who could even be described as ....keen!

So today.....

We have a Natural Work Team (like a commitee for those of you who aren't familiar with Tesco speak) with 13 members, all of whom are doing some fantastic work to help organise the whole thing.... we've chopped it up into equipment, training, transport, food, fundraising, accomodation, insurance, support and finance and we have different people looking after different areas. All very civilised!.....sounds simple doesn't it?! I'm going to give you an update on some of these areas over the next few weeks to try and show you what's involved and how we've done it.

We have a support team of 6 people who are going to help look after us and ferry us about. I can't over emphasise how important these guys are going to be to us...

And finally we have 49 climbers. 49 people who are prepared to complete this challenge and raise as much money as they can for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

That's our intro done then I think, stay tuned next time for the exciting topic (no really!) of equipment. In the mean time if you can help us at all please e-mail chris.j.barber@uk.tesco.com and if you can spare a few sheckles for a great cause please donate here...
