Tesco staff take on the challenge of a lifetime

Sunday 1 March 2009

Paul Dickens at Bury20Tesco distribution managers Paul Dickens and Tim Smith are taking on two of the world's most gruelling running events as they aim to raise £40,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

During the Amazon Jungle Marathon in October they will run 125 miles (200 km) in six days across mountains, jungle and rivers - in 110% humidity.  Then, just five months later, they'll run 151 miles (243 km) in another six day expedition across the energy-sapping dunes and sand storms of the Sahara battling temperatures up to 120 degrees.

Paul, an operations manager based at Cheshunt, said:

In the last four years I've been trying to see how far I can push myself and these events are an extension of that. I've been involved in adventure racing, triathlons and Ironman triathlons. Now I want to do more and raise as much as I can for charity.

And Tim Smith, planning and performance manager at Fenny Lock distribution centre, said:

For both races you have to be self-sufficient - everything you need, apart from water, you carry with you. For me it's all about the personal challenge.
