Tesco Top the League in Fundraising Derby
Thursday 28 May 2009
Staff from two Merseyside Tesco stores, Edge Hill Tesco Metro and Bromborough Homeplus, played out a fundraising football derby at Everton's Goodison Park last Saturday in aid of the Giving children equipment to be independent campaign.
The team from Edge Hill, wearing the blue Everton kits, were victorious with a final score of 3-2. Friends, family and colleagues of the all Tesco staff were in the stands to support two worthy causes: The Everton Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The winning side of the day was definitely the two charities, with an impressive score of £2000 in the back of the net.
Four year old football fan Patrick Kelly, his twin brother Thomas and his older brother Michael had a ball being mascots for the game. Patrick has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a condition that causes damage to the nerves at the base of the spinal chord and he is unable to walk but can use his power assisted wheelchair to play powerchair football.
Not yet full time on the total, Tesco staff have championship hopes: donations will continue to cross the line from programme sales, donations and additional sponsorship. In addition, a local university student filmed the event and copies of the DVD will be sold to raise funds. At least £1500 has gone to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, Tesco Charity of the Year 2009!
