Tesco staff give it their best shot for Leicestershire teen

Monday 8 February 2010

A Leicestershire teen was the guest of honour at a charity clay pigeon shoot as Tesco staff and James and family with his gifts courtesy of Tesco staffsuppliers took their best shot to raise an incredible £50,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, Tesco Charity of the Year 2009.

Eighteen-year-old James Everett from Melton Mowbray met the 35 competitors taking part in the shoot at the Tesco Grocery Stream's annual event in Market Bosworth. He watched the afternoon's activities and joined the evening meal along with his parents. James has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a devastating, incurable and life-limiting condition that causes muscles to waste away.

James has applied to the charity for funding for a new powered wheelchair which would cost his family over £10,000. As well as raising vital funds through the shoot, the generous competitors also brought James gifts including a flat screen television, and an iPod Touch with docking station.

James said:

I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part today - I can't believe how much money was raised! It's brilliant that Tesco are helping children and young people like me to get the life-changing equipment we need.

I was absolutely speechless when I was given all my gifts. I didn't expect it at all and I can't believe how generous everyone was.

Event organiser and Tesco Distribution Grocery Stream Director Ian Brown said:

The event went fantastically well, everyone really enjoyed themselves and I'm delighted that we managed to raise so much money. The competition was fiercely contested but the real winners were the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and the young people like James who need this vital equipment.
