Zak finds new freedom after long wait

Thirteen-year-old Zak Hughes had been on an NHS waiting list for a powered wheelchair since January 2008. Now, thanks to Tesco staff in Devon, he has finally received the funding for a new £9,000 wheelchair.

Zak has a rare condition called myotubular myopathy, which causes extreme muscle weakness, prevents him from being able to walk and leaves him totally dependent on his parents.

His mum, Wendy, describes the moment the chair arrived as “like winning the national lottery”, while Zak explains the difference to his life that the funding has made:

My new chair is absolutely brilliant and has changed my life. I can keep up with my friends, reach
books on the high shelf at the library and stretch out when I’m tired.

Most importantly, I can decide where I want to go and do what I want to do without relying on anyone else.
